We love conference weekend! Personally, Ken and I think that the twice yearly opportunity to listen to our dear, sweet prophet and hold our family near and dear is the absolutely best. We look forward to it so much and it is nice to cancel all activities and outings and enjoy our time together.
We haven't always canceled all of our activities and it was always so frustrating. Even though we have tried to make General Conference a major priority the past 9 or 10 years every once in awhile we have let a soccer game (or 3) get in the way and make us delay watching conference and then we always regret it later. We let that happen in the fall session, it honestly wasn't much of delay the boys were reffing soccer and didn't finish until 12:30pm and it started at 11. But, we totally kicked ourselves later. So our kids were once again adamant that we back out of any commitments and just stay home together. I have to say it was completely lovely and that I am purely writing this here to remind us in the future. We are so grateful that our children are so excited for this weekend too!
Now that our kids have grown so much we don't fit on the couch even though it folds out into a queen size bed. Ken and the boys hauled out our king size mattress. We stay in our Pj's, eat a ton of food, and cuddle like crazy while listening to talks from the General Authorities that encourage us to be better. Yep, it's pretty much the best two days a mother could ever ask for!
For the first sessions we had just finished eating eggs, bacon, rice (for Darin and all the girls), and Toast (for Ken and Nathan). So we mainly snacked on sweets.During the afternoon session we had a nacho bar. Pretty much the best conference food ever! So easy to prepare and just chill. Our friends the Belanger's joined us halfway through this session.
It wouldn't be conference without a little dozing:)
The girls are awesome though! Rose even wrote out her jeopardy questions this time. Ginger worked alot on her packet too.
Ken took Darin, Nathan, and the Basinger Boys to the priesthood session and out to ice cream. Since they were gone nearly 4 hours me and the girls weeded the front flower beds.
Rose has no fear anymore and loves to grab worms and other squishy bugs she finds outside.
After working outside we did Zumba! Ginger gets tired after a few songs but Rose did the whole thing with me. It's especially fun with the Zumba scarfs.
Look at them shaking those cute hips.
Did I mention that we had a visitor watching Saturday's sessions of conference? The girls caught a baby snake outside.
Sunday morning we had Biscuits and Gravy and French Toast with Buttermilk Syrup. It was so yummy! We also had the Gutierrez family over to watch with us.
Then we took a quick nap, and had 20 minutes to prep for the last session. Sometimes, okay lots of times I complain to my friends about being held hostage by our family traditions. Our kids really do expect a lot sometimes. But they were so awesome and chipped in to help me prepare the last of our tailgating food.
Look at all this food! So delicious! We had the Didier family over for this session. They are new in our ward but I have a feeling we'll be great friends. Kim, the mom totally speaks my language. And she brought over a ton of yummy munchies too. Only complaint I got from the kids was that they were not a fan of the frozen pre-prepared chicken wings and wanted me to make it from scratch next time. See, HIGH expectations those ones have!
And another nap. We gave Nathan a hard time about falling asleep but secretly I was kind of happy because he kicked our trash last time we played conference jeopardy because his notes were so awesome:) To be fair Nathan was recovering from being seriously sick with bronchitis and had broken out in hives from head to toe--literally!
Rose loved playing with Ashley too.
Handsome Darin!
Not the greatest picture but the only one we have.
We released our little snake friend. It was an awesome weekend full of good food, good friends, and great uplifting messages!
