It's a good thing that these boys have a pretty tough mom who likes primitive camping herself, because of course Ken happened to be out of town until the morning of the overnight. Does he plan this on purpose??? I do admit I ask myself that question. But, no he doesn't. It just seems like even though he hardly travels anymore it always falls on the week before some big activity that our boys have to go to and that he is responsible for.
I do think Ken is one lucky guy because we packed all of his gear and it was pretty much ready to go for him.
I only included this picture because the girls were thoroughly thrilled to help the boys pack for their adventure.
It's nice to have a big brother who is a pro at this sort of stuff too. Wait, except he has gone exactly the same amount of hike-in overnights as Nathan has:-) I call it "little brother syndrome". Last year Ken took Darin's group of 11 yr olds, this year it was Nathan's. But he always brings both of our boys because we aren't about to limit it to just one of our sons.
I can tease Nathan about that, but then he turns into the Big Brother for the girls...

Darin, who is still working on brownie points with her walked behind her as she marched all around the house. Darin wants to baptize her so bad so he is always working on brownie points. It's super cute. Sometimes Ginger says that she will let Darin baptize her when she is 8 and other days she insists on Daddy! Either way, I love the older brother and young man it has turned Darin into.

Smores! Poor boys have had to do all of their cooking over propane because of the severe drought, Texas has been in a constant burn ban for almost 10 months now.

Hiking out! Ken said it was an awesome overnight. The boys had fun and passed off a ton of requirements.
So after the boys and Ken got home. I got to hear the real story from my "babies". Because you know they come home from these manly adventures and tell their mom just how tough everything was and how tired they are. Not in what a terrible experience kind of way, but in a bragging way, basically to get out of unpacking:-) And then Nathan fessed up to the fact that they had only gotten 2 hours of sleep in his tent because they were playing games all night, running around, and throwing rocks into the creek.It turns out that by the time they made it to the primitive sites that a set of campers took one of their sites and was sandwiched in between the two sites Ken had paid for. There were lots of Dad's who couldn't come this time so the boys decided they wanted to sleep together. It turned out that all the boys wanted to tent with friends even if their Dad was there anyway. So they had two boy tents and one for the leaders. And by one I mean 4 Dad's in a two man tent, I still chuckle about that one:-) Ken is super strict about following policy where adults can only tent with their own child. So it happened that the boys all tented at one campsite and the Dad's were at the other. Most of the boys partied all night long. There was Darin and one other boy who went to sleep but it was a free for all with all the others. So no wonder the boys were exhausted, but they had a great time!
