Catapult Wars

The 11 yr old Scout Patrol that Ken is over (and Nathan is part of) worked on knots and lashings for 6 weeks in January-February at their weekly Patrol Meeting. As they learned their lashings they also began prototyping catapults. All for their Catapult WAR!

Sure they could have passed off these requirements in a couple of weeks, but Ken is determined that the boys really learn the things that he passes them off on so that they will really remember it.  Plus, it's fun to focus on a theme for a month or so and then have a big activity that challenges the boys and culminates everything they have learned.

Pictures from a Patrol Meeting...

The day of the Catapult Wars was freezing.  It really was so sad because the week before had been gorgeous mid-to-high 60's.  Of course their activity started at 8am and it was 38 degrees outside not factoring in the huge wind chill.  The boys survived by wearing lots of father's jackets.
And by drinking Hot Cocoa and eating donuts:-)

Our 11 yr scouts meet with a neighboring ward.  Between the two there are usually between 7-10 boys.  But what is really nice is having 4 leaders.  Especially for Ken because he sometimes has to travel and misses meetings.  Actually, all the leaders sometimes travel so it is good all around.

They decided to pit ward against ward.
Nathan- OS Ward
Brandon and TJ- OS Ward

Brother Phipps (the other 11 yr leader from our ward) built a 3rd Catapult.

Bringing in the balloons.  Because in freezing weather it is always a good idea to hurl water balloons at each other:-)

They fired a bunch more times then Ken got on video.  Ken and Nathan said that the activity was awesome despite being cold.  I can't believe the scouts were so willing and happy to be at the park for 3 1/2 hours playing their war.  It's pretty awesome!

Next challenge is wilderness survival (passing off plants, animals, and first aid) can't wait to see what they come up with for that:-)
